Turmeric + Cardamom Warming Mulled Wine / Cider
When the weather dips, the Netflix goes on and the crockpot gets dusted off. This classic mulled wine recipe is tweaked to include the healing powers of turmeric and cardamom. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal, culinary, and cosmetic virtues. Curcumin is the active part of this root and has many health-promoting benefits. If you choose not to imbibe or you live in the Southern Hemisphere where summer is just around the corner, skip the wine and brandy and replace it with apple cider or tea.
This is a delicious grounding afternoon (or post-yoga) treat. Add almond milk and agave to taste!
Ingredients
6 whole cloves
2 whole star anise pods
4 (3- by 1/2-inch) strips fresh lemon zest
4 (4- by 1/2-inch) strips fresh orange zest

1/2 cup kirsch or other cherry-flavored brandy
1 1/2 cups water
3/4 cup sugar or maple syrup
1 (3-inch) cinnamon stick
1 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise
1 tablespoon turmeric powder
1 tablespoon ground cardamom
